Social Psychology of Risk (SPoR) has recently commenced a new course in Embodiment and Risk.

A wonderful group of people that have come together from all over the globe, to discuss embodiment to further enhance their job roles, often in the Safety field.
In this module we have discussed Resonance and how it is Embodied in all we do. Consider some simple questions:
- How do you resonate with people?
- How do you connect with others?
- How do you listen?
- How is what you do embodied and understood?
I often reflect about what I have done in the past through Social Psychology of Risk, and one of the best reminders is my semiotic cupboard. https://safetyrisk.net/what-is-semiotics-video/
These mementoes I keep trigger memories of significance to me, of times, relationships, conversations, history and challenges.
My semiotic artefacts and memories remind me of so much more than I can articulate.
One particular semiotic was gifted to me from Sreehari and Kalairaj, a small statue of Ganesha https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ganesha
When we talk and interact and sometimes we never know if we have Resonated with someone, if they understood the message, if it connected with them, was it relevant, has something changed.
It was a beautiful gift from these men.
What I was discussed clearly Resonated with them. They stated so when they gave me the gift.
I have presented and lectured many times in Safety. When it was free, I received an obligatory bottle of wine for my troubles. Sometimes I get a follow-up email or phone call for clarification.
Unfortunatley, what I am requested to do in Safety is Tell people Stuff.
Rarely does telling Resonate, because Safety is not designed that way. Afterall, why should I bother ‘connecting’ with objects?
I Tell. You Do.
When we connect and are engaged, we often learn, not so much from the content of the moment but through the relational knowing that comes with social meaning. Is this how you think when you conduct safety observations and conversations?
In SPoR, we focus on connection more than content, relationships more than regulation and being present, listening and influencing for better outcomes in risk. Does that sound like what you do? Would you like to find out more?
You can find out this May in Houston, Texas as SPoR comes to the USA!

Matt, the issue of resonance is critical in understanding connection with others. Unless the Safety industry learns how to create this connection with the people they serve and want to help, there will be no change. We know that power over and telling doesn’t work and so there needs to be an alternative that works. You would think that people in safety would want to know about it? Apparently not.
