safety slogansDoes safety require more than just slogans? Read this article to gain insight into the harmful consequences of using safety slogans.

quotable quote:

“The use of silly and meaningless safety slogans matters, it creates a distraction and delusion that safety and risk are being addressed. We may feel good about speaking such words but they dumb down culture and distract people from taking safety seriously”. by Dr Rob Long HERE

in vest in safety
In Vest, In Safety

Safety slogans are everywhere. From posters in workplaces to reminders on noticeboards, they’re often seen as a quick and simple way to promote awareness. But while slogans can be catchy, they also carry hidden risks. The messages they send—both consciously and unconsciously—can shape how people think about safety, and not always for the better.

Articles such as Safety Is a Choice You Make and Sayings, Slogans and Aphorisms challenge us to reflect on this issue. Clever phrases may grab attention, but they can also oversimplify complex realities. Too often, people adopt slogans as their primary source of “knowledge,” which creates a shallow and sometimes misleading view of safety.

So, what’s the alternative? Instead of relying on slogans, focus on approaches that truly make a difference:

  • Have meaningful conversations about risks and responsibilities.

  • Collaborate with teams to build stronger safety culture.

  • Encourage critical thinking rather than repeating catchphrases.

To put it bluntly, would you hang safety slogans around your own home to remind your family how to behave? If not, why treat workplaces that way?

Dr. Rob Long, in Is Safety a Choice You Make, highlights how many industry slogans are not only illogical but culturally harmful. Phrases like “all accidents are preventable” or “safety is no accident” may sound motivating, but they often ignore the role of hindsight bias and other human factors. The words we use matter—they shape culture and influence behaviour far more than we often realise.

If you’re still convinced safety slogans are the answer, consider reading Phil La Duke’s article, Safety Slogans Don’t Save Lives. His perspective adds weight to the argument that real safety improvement requires more than clever wordplay.

That said, slogans aren’t going away anytime soon. Over the years, we’ve curated what we believe is the world’s largest collection of safety slogans, quotes, and messages—so popular that many other sites have since replicated them. While they may spark a smile or make a point, we encourage you to think critically about their limits and remember: genuine safety culture is built on dialogue, not decoration.

Why Are Safety Slogans Important?

The Role of Safety Slogans in Workplace Culture

Safety slogans have long been used to reinforce important messages and encourage safe behavior. Many of us can still recall iconic public safety campaigns such as “Only you can prevent forest fires,” “Stranger Danger,” or “Just say no.” These simple phrases remain ingrained in memory decades later, proving how effective short, punchy messages can be in shaping habits.

In the workplace, safety slogans can serve a similar purpose. While some employees may dismiss them as “cheesy” or overly simplistic, the reality is that well-chosen slogans can help reduce unsafe practices and underline existing safety procedures.

Introducing Safety Slogans to Employees

Certain workplace areas may consistently present risks due to carelessness or shortcuts. In these cases, a slogan can be a useful reminder. For instance, a phrase like “Safety glasses — all in favor, say EYE” adds a touch of humor while reinforcing the importance of wearing protective eyewear.

To maximize impact, slogans should be introduced as part of a broader safety initiative, such as during a toolbox talk or safety meeting. Linking the slogan to a discussion of the underlying hazard ensures employees understand the “why” behind the rule. Posting the slogan in relevant areas then provides an ongoing visual cue that reinforces the meeting’s key message.

Reinforcing the Message

A slogan on its own isn’t enough. Its effectiveness depends on consistent reinforcement by leaders and supervisors. A quick reminder—such as repeating the slogan when someone forgets a rule—can reinforce expectations not only for the individual but also for those observing. When managers consistently echo these reminders, the message gains credibility and employees are more likely to adopt the behavior.

The Power of Fun and Catchy Slogans

Humor, rhyme, and wordplay often make slogans more memorable. A lighthearted phrase can cut through the noise of daily routines and stick in employees’ minds. Examples include:

  • Be aware, take care

  • Know safety, no accidents

  • Your good health is your greatest wealth

  • Safety is free — use it generously

  • A harness is better than a hearse

  • Hearing protection is a sound investment

  • Lifting’s a breeze when you bend at the knees

  • Hard hats — they’re not just for decoration

These slogans may draw a smile, but they also deliver important reminders in a way that resonates.

Final Thoughts

Wherever safety is a concern, slogans can play a supportive role in accident prevention. When introduced thoughtfully—through meetings, signage, and consistent reinforcement—they become more than just words on a poster. They act as memory triggers that remind employees of broader safety conversations. And when made fun and engaging, they not only encourage compliance but also help build a culture where safety is taken seriously.

HOW TO WRITE YOUR OWN SAFETY SLOGANS:

Often, writing your own slogans can increase the effectiveness of your safety slogan or safety message.  A safety slogan written by your company for your company reflects your individual goals, and a safety slogan specifically written by you or your staff (for free!) can appeal more to your workers – try running a safety slogan or safety message competition! For tips on how to write your own competition and award winning slogans for safety: How to write your own safety slogans

Some Tips on Creating Your Own Safety Slogans by SafetyCulture.com

Here are some tips on how to create your own safety slogans:

  • Keep your slogans short.
    • A short slogan can be read and remembered by an employee in a single glance, and short phrases are particularly easy to recall.
  • Make the slogan focused on the situation.
    • There are many available safety slogans. Choose or write a slogan related to the workplace or the risks that are present.
  • Incorporate rhyming words.
    • Rhyming words tend to stick more in people’s heads because our “brains tend to remember information that forms a memorable pattern.”
  • Use acronyms.
    • One example is “K.I.S.S. – Keep it Safe and Sound.”
  • Make it catchy.
    • Choose words or phrases that catches attention. It could also be funny. Use striking colors and large fonts to make your slogans more attention-grabbing.
