How to Be Safe on a Skiing Holiday
Guest Post
Standing on top of beautiful mountain ranges and looking at the beautiful view underneath, with the sun glistening on the snowy peaks is quite an exhilarating experience. Whooshing down the slopes of mountains and having a brilliant skiing experience is quite a good idea for a winter holiday but it is also quite a dangerous sport. It is always a good idea to be cautious of the risks that will be involved before you go ahead on your skiing trip.
Be fit before you start
Skiing is quite an enticing sport but involves a lot of vigorous physical exertion and needs exercise. It is this vigor that makes it extremely important for you to be extremely healthy and reasonably fit. While skiing down the slopes you will be likely to get a little bruised, which makes it all the more important for you to go through a skiing exercise routine at least for a week before you go on your skiing winter trip.
Choose a good insurance policy
An insurance policy is quite necessary while you go on a skiing trip. Since it is classified as an adventure and dangerous sport, the policy will explicitly cover the sport. Ensure that all the activities that you want to participate in during your holiday will be included in the policy. Heli-skiing, skiing off-piste and tobogganing are few of these activities that need to be part of the policy.
Wear appropriate gear
Frostbite and hypothermia tends to occur while exposing yourself to cold weather conditions, especially if you will be at high altitudes. Protective clothing that includes gloves, goggles and padded clothes needs to be worn in order to avoid suffering from these extreme weather conditions. It is advisable to wear layers of loose and light wind and water resistant clothes under your outer padded layer of clothes, so that you will constantly be kept warm.
Layering will allow you to let your body adjust to the constantly changing cold temperatures. Weather conditions in mountainous regions constantly keep changing. Beautiful sunny weather can suddenly change into a severe blizzard, so it is quite necessary to be prepared for these extreme temperature changes.
Carry right equipment
Along with wearing the right clothes, it is necessary to carry the right gear and equipment as well. To avoid having cold feet, shin splints and blisters, you will need to wear well-fitting pair of boots. Don’t forget to adjust your bindings properly as well so that you will be easily released if you will lose control and fight. While falling, your ski tends to act as a lever, which can twist your leg resulting in dangerous injuries.
Beware of avalanches and off-piste dangers
Avalanches can be caused because of the extreme weather conditions. Make sure that you do not ignore any warning signs put up in avalanche prone areas. Red flags and signs are put up by resorts and safety officers to warn visitors. Take local advice if necessary while going on a ski trip. If the piste is closed it means that it is quite unsafe to be in that area, so avoid skiing in those areas.
