Heuristics are an important topic in Social Psychology of Risk (SPoR), it helps us to understand how people think and move away from Brain Centrism.
You can find it in the SPoR BoK under the Gut bubble.
HB 327 also discusses Heuristics in relation to Risk. I believe that this is one of the most important publications around ISO 30000 Risk Management. And a little known part of Risk Management.
And one of the most important authors on Heuristics is Gerd Gigerenzer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerd_Gigerenzer
In the discussion I wanted to hear what Gerd had to say on Heuristics and bounded rationality and listen to his perspective.
Whenever I read a book I try to talk to it, ask it questions, and formulate a hypothesis. In this video I am being passive purposely, I want to know the parts about maths and economics it relates to, I admit freely when it comes to both those topics I skim read at best.
I have purchased Gerd’s next book ‘The Intelligence of Intuition’ (2023) and look forward to reading it this weekend and then interviewing Gerd again.
Enjoy!

Hi Matt,
Great conversation. It makes us realise that our knowledge on decision making in risk is rather limited and most of the time misleading. Thanks for sharing the podcast.

Hi Matt, great podcast, learned some more great insights on decision making. Think I can listen a few times more and keep hearing new things
greetings Peter

Matt, what a great podcast and such a humble man of outstanding insight as Gerd. I have read all his works and would consider them foundational for anyone in risk and safety. I particularly enjoyed his chapter 6 in his latest book on Embodied heuristics, this is essential if you want to understand what learning is. Unfortunately, many of those in safety who claim to know something about learning don’t!

With a word that i do not often use at work, Gerd was a delight and gentleman in all his communications. Makes coming to work great!
