Psychosocial risk isn’t understood by most ‘safety professionals’ let alone CEO’s of PCBU’s. And the latest review of the incident notification requirements by SWA wants to put more onus on it with an expectation that PCBU’s are actually going to understand what it is they need to report and proactively report it…
I used to work with an Org Psych who developed a brilliant program with regard to psychosocial risks with our clients, unfortunately our clients weren’t ready to hear what he had to say and it got no traction..

Chiara, the safety industry are so good at creating problems for themselves. Without a reformed WHS curriculum and expertise in Psychosocial methodology all safety is going to do is apply its ignorance to the issue and just make everything worse. This is where regulators and associations are just so out of touch with reality. They don’t consult, they don’t listen and themselves are stacked with engineers and safety cultists. Safe Work Australia is a classic example of head in the sand safety. Oh, we want to do something about Psychosocial health, lets ask an engineer to design a program. The stuff put out by the regulators and associations is a joke.

Hi Yasmin, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, psychosocial risk is NOT incorporated in WHS, its token lip service as there is no curriculum or education in place to help safety people tackle risk in such a way. and, the standards etc put out about hazards just make it all worse. So, typical safety, creating new problems and making safety more dangerous. The last person anyone wants to talk about in any workplace about psychosocial issues is a person trained in policing and telling.
