Veterinary Clinic Staff Safety Guidelines
Veterinary Industry Guide to Workplace Safety – Released
Pro-Visual Publishing has just released its 2014 edition of the Veterinary Industry Guide to Workplace Safety. Endorsed by the Australian Veterinary Association and the NSCA, this guide provides veterinarians and vet nurses with up-to-date information on workplace health and safety and is distributed free-of-charge to veterinary clinics, surgeries and laboratories throughout Australia. This years guide covers important topics including guidelines to cleaning, bullying in the workplace, guidelines for veterinary personal biosecurity, developing a Safety Management System and the WHS harmonisation model. These topics are covered to ensure all workers are well equipped when faced with said situations.
Cleaning the veterinary clinic and surgeries requires the use of appropriate disinfectant. This years guide explains the types of disinfectants available and how they differentiate, making it easier for you to decide which disinfectant is best for you and your business. Along with a clean workplace, veterinarians must make sure they are as safe as possible from zoonotic infections. Veterinary personal biosecurity is highlighted and veterinarians are directed to resources containing valuable information from keeping safe against said infections.
Another extremely important topic is bullying in the workplace. Both employers and employees have a responsibility to make sure it doesn’t happen and the guide pinpoints exactly what they are. The different types of bullying and the effects of what bullying can do to people are stressed and ways that both employers and employees can prevent bullying are discussed.
Under Work, Health and Safety law, a Safety Management System (SMS) must be established and implemented to ensure the workplace is safe. The guide takes you through the steps of how to set up an SMS including, requirements, planning, establishing, elements and implementing the SMS. Accompanied by the above topics, the new WHS harmonisation model is also a prominent subject. The key principles, aims of compliance and how this will effect all in the work place are explained to ensure a safe environment.
“I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Veterinary Industry Guide to Workplace Safety. Their support has made it possible for the guide to be distributed free of charge”, said John Hutchings, CEO, Pro-Visual Publishing, “It is important to ensure that all employees get home to their families the same way they left them”.
