Whenever we venture into organisations who are looking for SPoR methods, how do we know when we are successful?
In SPoR, there are many indicators and measures of success but the most sought-after measure of success, is the question listed above.
We are often contacted by Managers, Leaders and Safety Managers to help them change their culture and safety culture. We often hear that they have tried everything and for some strange reason decide last to contact us. Then once we have been working in an organisation for a short time, they make it very clear that they wished they had contacted us much sooner.
But what is music to our ears is when we are finally asked the question: This is not about safety is it?
This is the question we love to hear, when they realise that SPoR is NOT about safety. SPoR is about people, humanising risk and ethical practice.
But it takes a bit of time for clients to realise we are NOT about: measuring performance, traditional safety, slogans or con shows. SPoR is about helping organisations with a wish for longitudinal culture change. SPoR is not interested in organisational performance, counting objects or injuries, controls and gimmicks. In SPoR we have a very clear methodology and method (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/spor-and-semiotics/) and we deliver that in spades, all over the globe.
It doesn’t take too long for that realisation that, the best way to improve safety is to NOT do Safety. Once this realisation is understood, the organisation progresses in leaps and bounds.

Who knows, you may discover that the best way to get safety is NOT to do safety.
