Budapest – 2 days of relaxing and taking in the wonders of this beautiful city, split in two by the Danube. It is hard to describe the rich cultural heritage of this place. Just as it is hard to describe Austria in slogan.
We did the usual things and saw the usual sights but the highlight for me was the traditional folk music in the hotel.
After palaces, cathedral, river cruises and museums, artwork (Da Vinci) then everyone else had retired to bed, I took some time to myself to reflect on the day. By chance I stumbled on Hungarian Folk band in a bar.
They were playing nothing that I knew. But the couple listening to me apparently knew the music.
It was one of those random moment decisions in the I don’t even know why I asked them, perhaps I was missing home, perhaps I felt uniquely Australian. Or perhaps the music suggested it to me something I has heard before. So, I walked over to the band and said I am an Aussie, can you play something for me? And the band played Waltzing Matilda
What a moment.
How amazing to have my culture resonating in my ears, delivered by a Hungarian Folk Band in a Budapest Bar.
