Dangerous Goods Training: Industry News And Updates
Guest Post
Dangerous goods are defined as any substance that poses a significant risk to health, safety, or property when transported by land, sea, or air. Due to the risks that dangerous goods pose to the public welfare, shipping of these goods needs to be firmly regulated. Such regulations require dangerous goods to be packed, handled, and marked so that they pose as little danger as possible while being transported.
Dangerous goods training has been designed to cover the transportation of these goods and the safest way of transporting them via different modes of transportation. However, there have been several incidents in recent years regarding the aviation industry that may suggest that more dangerous goods training may be necessary to help airline personnel deal with the transportation of dangerous goods both in the cargo hold and by passengers who may not know that some of the goods they are packing are classified as dangerous goods.
Reports of chain saws and motors filled with gas being shipped via air and later discovered upon unloading the cargo hold of the plane, dangerous chemicals, and even fireworks and black powder being shipped in unmarked containers and not packed or handled properly have been report. In other cases lighter, matches, and other dangerous materials, have been packed in suitcases by passengers who seemed totally unaware of the dangers these materials posed.
There have even been some reports of cargo crews loading dangerous materials such as paint and paint thinners onto planes when the cargo was clearly marked without seeing that this material was properly loaded onto the plane in appropriate containers.
All of these incidents demonstrates a need for continued dangerous goods training especially in the aviation field. New regulations and rules, new safety standards, and continuing concern over the transportation and delivery of these goods are imperative and seeing that everyone that handles or ships dangerous materials is knowledgeable regarding the risks that these materials pose and know the proper way these materials should be marked, packed, and transported is essential in protecting the public welfare
Proper inspection of suitcases and containers that may be carrying dangerous goods needs to be addressed and everyone concerned with the handling and shipping of such goods needs to made aware of these dangers.
