Laboratory Workplace Safety
Laboratory Guide to Workplace Safety (NZ) 2014 – Released
There are many hazards present in the laboratory workplace. Everyone involved in the laboratory needs
to be aware of the various hazards than can arise when working with different materials, chemicals,
equipment and other general safety matters. This year, Pro-Visual Publishing, with the support of Science
Industry Australia (SIA) and the Australasian Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA), has
released the next edition of the Laboratory Guide to Workplace Safety (NZ) 2014, with the prime focus on
emergency procedures and general safety advice.
Emergency procedures may need to be considered in any general laboratory practice, but especially
during evacuations and fires, and chemical and radioactive spillages. When handling laboratory
equipment, for example, fume cupboards, glassware or electrical equipment, safety needs to be a number
one priority. It is also important for laboratories to have regulations and procedures in place for handling
hazardous experiments outside and during work hours, ensuring the health and safety of all involved in
the process.
“I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Laboratory Guide to Workplace Safety (NZ) 2014. Their
support has made it possible for the guide to be distributed free of charge”, said John Hutchings, CEO,
Pro-Visual Publishing.
