The number of emails I get about people getting the sack for minor safety breeches staggers me. Such actions are often accompanied by language like ‘that will teach them a lesson’ or ‘now people will know we are serious about safety’.
Of course, such language is delusional and there is no motivational factor in watching someone else get dismissed. None of this changes behaviour or thinking about how workers tackle risk in the workplace.
Isn’t it fascinating that there is no curriculum for safety people on the dynamics of motivation, the art of listening or skills in conversation. Indeed, there is nothing in the AIHS BoK either. The dynamic metaphor for the AIHS Bok is zero but ‘let’s not talk about the war’. How astounding to have a chapter on ethics without any discussion of zero, that global mantra for brutalism. How surprising that one can raise the issue of ethics and not discuss the problem of brutalism in the safety industry.
Being brutal to people solves nothing. Sacking people for minor safety breeches serves no purpose. Witnessing a sacking is de-motivating and it doesn’t work, it doesn’t create safer outcomes but rather teaches people a collection of destructive beliefs that run under the surface in culture. People are only motivated by truth, control and meaning/purpose. Perhaps read here:

What is also a fascination when I get these emails is that there is rarely a conversation with the worker when they get the sack. It is mostly a surprise and there is little opportunity for learning about the motivation of the worker. There is also no discussion about how the culture of the organization fosters certain behaviours. Everything is projected on the worker. It couldn’t possibly be that managers and supervisors have contributed to confusion, mixed messages and misunderstandings. It’s usually BBS, Just Culture spin and there’s the door.
In order to understand motivation one has to step outside of the ancient discourse of behaviourism. We learned a long time ago that humans are not the sum of inputs and outputs. We learned that humans, behaviours and living are complex, messy and unconscious.
Yet, that doesn’t seem to make any dent into the mythology perpetuated in the safety world that giving people the sack somehow works to promote safety. What people really learn about Safety when someone gets the sack is the opposite. They learn that Safety can’t be trusted, Safety is immature, Safety doesn’t listen and Safety enjoys policing and brutalism. All of these learnings are founded in the mantra of zero, counting injuries and following the 1930s theory of behaviourism.
