This was one of the entries, sent in by Cip Corva, for our recent “For The Love of Zero Contest”.  I thought it was brilliant and worthy of its own post (if safety is zero harm then love is just zero hate – if you love zero then you have nothing to love):

Good on you for lighting the flame of Safety by engaging people to question and judge the worthiness of this fallacy. I would like to suggest this slogan:

“FOR THE LOVE OF ZERO, THE SAFETY GOAL WAS LOST”

This is adapted from “For Want of a Nail” which is a proverb, having numerous variations over several centuries, reminding that seemingly unimportant acts or omissions can have grave and unforeseen consequences.

This is how it goes:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

This can be adapted to safety:

For the love of zero the safety goal was lost,
For want of a safety goal the worker was lost,
For want of a worker productivity was lost,
For want of productivity profit was lost,
For want of profit the company was lost,
For want of a company employment was lost
For want of employment the community was lost
And all for want of a real safety goal.

“Safety is hidden in plain view; and zero harm hides our real safety goals”.
