Donβt Die! Safety at its Best
Thereβs no doubt that safety seems to be the place to find the utmost stupidity in the market. It never disappoints.
The latest is the Donβt Die campaign. Yes, thatβs right, complete with a collection of safety post nominals and claims of great success. And donβt forget you can get all the βDonβt Dieβ merch.
I wonder if they sell this merch outside funeral parlours or cemeteries?
And, this is in Safety. And what is the purpose of safety?
However, if you really want to walk down the path of fallibility denial (https://safetyrisk.net/wishing-away-fragility-and-fallibility-in-safety/) you can join the Donβt Die Community here: https://dontdie.bryanjohnson.com/
You can see the DD community, with punching fists into the air. There you go Death, weβre punching our fists against you.
You can read about the philosophies of living forever here: https://www.freethink.com/opinion/immortality-in-philosophy
But letβs come back to safety.
Apparently, the DD campaign in safety is packaged as the βConstructing Hopeβ program. You will also be please to know that the creator of this program is not qualified in anything other than safety.
I can just imagine how this safety βprogramβ is go down at the local medical school, psychiatric ward or insurance company.
The ignorance of all of this is mind numbing.
Perhaps a little read of Ernst Becker (The Denial of Death) might be a good start: https://humanposthuman.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/ernest_becker_the_denial_of_deathbookfi-org.pdf
BTW, the denial of death/fallibility has nothing to do with Hope. Indeed, one would need to have some clue about the nature of human resilience (https://www.humandymensions.com/product/everyday-social-resilience-being-in-risk/) to understand what Hope is. Even a thimble full of critical thinking might blow this kind of nonsense away. The trouble is, such campaigns are dangerous and harmful.
The sad thing to see in this kind of campaign is that it is in the same discourse as Zero or 1% safer. Itβs all the same stuff. And, we also know that these silly campaigns canβt last long, just wait for the founder to die and hang their merch on their tombstone.
When is Safety going to stop speaking nonsense to people?
When is Safety going to create a culture where this kind of nonsense gets no air time or platform?
When is Safety going to develop a curriculum where critical thinking and ethics might be included so it can one day become professional?
Because, all of this kind of stuff such as Donβt Die, 1% Safer and Zero, keeps holding safety in the looney bracket so that no-one in the real world can take it seriously.
Big stretch to tie this to “safety” or a safety campaign or the safety industry? It’s not what it is. The guy is spending millions yearly on himself and dedicating every hour of his life to measuring every possible specific part of his anatomy to maximize his health and ultimately his lifespan. Of course he and his followers know they’re going to die eventually, he’s just trying to extend life as long as possible.
Thanks Paul, I see alignment between this stuff and zero discourse. The same philosophy.
the first images are from an actual safety campaign currently getting traction on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/posts/joshua-schwabauer-chst-stsc-61b811309_what-started-as-another-one-of-my-wild-hairs-ugcPost-7460165817352142849-5WaJ/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAB_TTgIBqpGglazcA2hPU11WbhrSpeoX59A
Wow….Apologies, it does exist! He means well… but that’s bad.
Most people mean well in zero, safety and risk. But donβt know they are causing harm indeed, are amplifying it. Itβs sad, because they are locked into a bubble through cognitive dissonance. Itβs common safety where education levels are so poor.
