Recently, I was reading Grow by Jim Stengel (a fabulous read) and was quite fascinated by his decision to write out a“Living Your Legacy”document each time he started a new assignment. Stengel worked at Proctor & Gamble for many years, in numerous roles across the world.
Stengel had decided that his legacy in every job he had was to make a significant business contribution that would positively affect the people he worked with, if not the entire organisation.
At the start of a new role (within 100 days) he would write down the legacy he wanted to leave, to help keep him focused and centred on how he acted in that assignment.
The magnificent thing is that he achieved a lot and produced a significant contribution to both Proctor and Gamble and his fellow employees. So much so, he wrote a brilliant book about it.
While it was quite noble of Stengel to take the time to essentially work out how he could make the world a better place in his marketing and senior management roles, it got me thinking about how the world would actually be an even better place, if safety professionals would get clear on the results they wanted to achieve in organisations.
