How To Complete a SWP

A very common search term used to find this website is: “How to complete a SWP”. An SWP or Standard Work Procedure or Safe Work Procedure is a common and necessary requirement on all construction and building sites. Most Principle Contractors will require and approve one of these before work commences.

The may also be known as: Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS). There is a bit of debate about the differences and what these tools should be called but they are all pretty similar tools used to manage risk.  They contain the following basic steps

  1. Step by step tasks or activities
  2. Identify the hazards or risks
  3. Rate or score the risk, before controls put in place
  4. Identify and list the controls or elimination process
  5. Rate or score the risk after controls are implemented
