Friable Asbestos vs. Non Friable Asbestos
Guest Post
There are just over 3,000 known asbestos containing products in Australia, many of which can be found in the average residential home. Asbestos products can be manufactured in two forms – Friable and non friable. The difference between these two types of material refers to how easily asbestos fibres are released into the air once disturbed.
Non Friable Asbestos
Non friable asbestos is asbestos that has been bonded with cement, vinyl, resin or other similar materials. This type of asbestos makes up over 97 per cent of asbestos containing products in Australia.
Non friable asbestos is considered relatively harmless unless broken. If accidently damaged, few fibres are released into the air and most will not continue to release fibres after the initial disturbance. However it is important that non friable asbestos is removed once it becomes broken or damaged in order to avoid further deterioration. Non friable asbestos would present a significant risk only when it is subject to significant abrasion through activities such as sanding or cutting with electric power tools.
Examples of non-friable asbestos products include vinyl asbestos tiles, corrugated asbestos sheet roofing and other asbestos containing cement products.
Friable asbestos material is that which can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder upon touch. This can also include non friable asbestos material which has deteriorated over time or become damaged. It is the most dangerous type of asbestos material and must be treated with great care. Some examples of friable asbestos materials include sprayed fireproofing or thermal insulation used in construction. Friable asbestos must be dealt with immediately by a qualified and licensed friable asbestos removal agency.
Asbestos products were a commonly used material in construction in the 1960s and 70s. There is no conclusive on-site testing for the presence of asbestos. Asbestos products can only conclusively be determined through sampling and laboratory testing. If you suspect the presence of asbestos materials in your home or work place, contact a professional asbestos removal agency immediately.
