The Zero Hypocrisy
Surprise surprise, we find out that CEOs in many tier 1 organisations are on obscene salaries: The Gaurdian – CEOs don’t understand how angry workers feel about executive pay
These are the same organisations that preach zero to workers but seek forgiveness and understanding when they are found to be corrupt https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/commentisfree/2018/mar/22/banking-inquiry-has-already-exposed-shocking-corruption-but-it-needs-more-time?
Of course much of the mythology about CEO salaries is based on the delusion that remuneration and KPIs are the basis for high performance. There is plenty of evidence to show that the KPI delusion is simply metrics ideology https://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2015/12/07/kpis-and-corporate-stupidity/#12cefb524aeb
One of the grand delusions about CEO world is language about infallibility. It’s only CEOs who speak zero nonsense to workers. However, workers know that zero is not true. In the MiProfile Survey Database of over 60,000, 75% of workers don’t believe in zero. Those at the coal face who actually do the work and take the risks know that zero language is nonsense.
Yet, the gap both in pay and belief widens, helping workers to become more cynical and skeptical about any safety message that comes down from high. Amazing how zero makes sense from the comfort of the board room. Then when zero is endorsed by regulators and the SIA workers realise what’s safety is all about. One cannot be professional and endorse zero!
In the end the outcome of speaking zero nonsense to workers is alienation, reaffirmed by pay scales that tell workers that executives are out of touch with reality. Workers know that it’s only zero in rhetoric because the fallibility and vulnerability of executives is on show. When CEOs fail or make mistakes they don’t want zero.
