The Semiotics of Logos
Symbols, colors, words, and language shape identity and create perceptions.
The study of semiotics (the study of symbols) and semiology (the study of language) provide valuable insights into the nature of organizational culture.
Below, I analyze two logos from a semiotic perspective—those of the Social Psychology of Risk (SPoR) discipline and the training company Corporate Dynamics.
The primary role of a logo is to identify a business, build instant recognition, and visually communicate the brand’s core values.
Semiotic Analysis of the SPoR Logo
The SPoR logo speaks about the way risk is understood, placing people and social interaction at its center.
By depicting two people, the logo emphasizes that risk emerges within social contexts, where individuals influence one another. The opposing profiles create a distinctive and memorable silhouette.
Together, the two heads suggest a progression in the understanding of risk—from individual thinking, through social interaction, to shared understanding.
The blue color conveys trust, thoughtful reflection, and rational thinking. Green introduces the social and collaborative dimension while also suggesting safety and permission.
The dark lettering adds authority, seriousness, and professional credibility.
The green “S“ in the text highlights the social dimension, while the Psi (Ψ) symbol emphasizes the word Psychology.
In ancient Greece, the word psyche originally meant butterfly and symbolized the breath of life—a life-giving wind. Through the influence of the Roman Empire, psyche gradually came to represent the human soul and the complexity of human life.
Overall, the logo communicates a clear message: risk is fundamentally about people—the way they think and the way they interact with one another—not merely about hazards, rules, or systems.
Semiotic Analysis of the Corporate Dynamics Logo
The Corporate Dynamics logo is simple and memorable. The red sphere immediately captures attention.
The contrast works particularly well: the grey square represents structure and stability, the red sphere symbolizes energy and competence, while the white curved arcs convey movement.
The square represents the structure, order, and stability of organizations that have reached a plateau of stagnation. Its grey color reflects neutrality, emotional restraint, and the detachment often found within established organizations.
The sphere symbolizes competence and innovation, while red—the color of vitality and life energy—expresses emotional intensity, determination, and action. The highlight on the sphere suggests a commitment to knowledge, insight, and clarity. The two white curved arcs communicate movement, progress, and transformation.
The chosen typeface, together with the red color, conveys confidence, action, and leadership.
The logo communicates the following message: we are a company of experienced professionals who build competence, engagement, and organizational capability within stable organizations.
Conclusion
A carefully chosen symbol, combined with the right words, creates an immediate and professional connection. It communicates personality and meaning without relying on lengthy explanations.
A logo acts as a clear visual signature that tells people who you are and helps distinguish your organization from the competition.

Dec, much ch more in the SPoR logo: the two faces create the optical vase illusion, well known in perception research; the question in one head and the groupspace in the other head create the meaning of dialectic between the individual and the group; the linking of the heads to each other is important showing the flow of conversation an connection.
