The safety management plan and its real use!
We all know what a safety management plan is; we are all legally obligated to have one. The safety management plan will also help contractors land contracts when competing with other contracting companies. Many contracting companies have this paperwork strictly because it gives off an impression that they are a highly professional and a diligent company.
Nowadays, you can download all the paperwork you need from the web without spending too much money on it. In most cases people don’t even pay attention to the quality of the document. Many times those things end up being useless. Why? Well, because they are written in such a way that they are too complicated to follow and thus even more complicated to implement. But who cares! They are just for show anyway, right? Wrong!
First of all, it baffles me to see how easily people disregard the many benefits that come from a well thought-through safety management plan. Secondly, I’m not sure how people come to a conclusion that it is a good idea to spend money on one and then leave it in a drawer somewhere, when it really doesn’t cost all that much to actually put things that are written down in to practice.
The construction industry is full of occupational hazards. Statistically speaking, it is a branch of industry with the highest rate of accidents that occur in the workplace. A well implemented management plan can help your contracting company avoid losing time and more importantly losing employees due to mishaps in the workplace.
After finishing the paperwork you should first familiarize your workforce with the mechanisms that are a part of the management plan. The education of your workers doesn’t cost you a dime, can be done in a very short amount of time, but gives great results. Of course this won’t be enough. You will have to buy the necessary safety equipment in order to protect your workers properly. In most cases this is the main reason that contractors avoid implementing their safety plan. Safety equipment isn’t all that cheap, but it is a onetime investment. You don’t have to buy new equipment every year.
If you really want to look at it from the financial side of things then look at it this way: What costs more, buying proper safety equipment or paying fines for not having it, paying for lawsuit settlements in case of an accident, potentially losing your contract and your license? Bear in mind that you are doing work in the industry branch with the highest probability of workplace accidents. The equipment doesn’t seem all that expensive now, does it?
As a contractor, a well thought-through, properly implemented and a quality management plan is your safety net. It helps you protect your workers, avoid liability for accidents, helps you get contracts more easily and protects your investments. If you plan on conserving your funds, the smart thing to do is to get one and use it properly too. Avoiding doing something that is designed to help you is absurd, don’t you agree?
