Guest Post
If you are using glass in your remodelling project then it important to exercise caution during handling and installation. Glass is fragile and liable to breakage so it must be handled with the utmost care. Accidents are quite common because broken pieces of glass can easily cause lacerations and heavy bleeding. Here are few important safety tips to keep in mind when remodelling with glass.
Make sure plenty of help is available
When you are moving heavy glass pieces like table and counter tops and window panels, don’t hesitate to ask for help. These things are difficult, if not impossible, to handle by yourself because the glass can easily slip from your hands. A breakage will create a wide hazardous area of broken glass, so the best idea is to exercise the utmost caution. Make sure that you warn others in the vicinity when you are moving the glass, so that they won’t accidentally bump into you.
Wear the proper gear
In case there is a breakage, make sure that you are wearing the proper gear before attempting a clean-up. The right gear includes safety goggles and puncture-proof gloves. The safety goggles will prevent tiny pieces of glass from being accidentally blown into your eyes. Never use just your hands to handle broken pieces of glass because it is very easy to get cuts and scratches. Always wear puncture-proof gloves to prevent injury.
You should first clean up the large glass pieces. Then, use a broom and a dust pan to sweep the area carefully. Make sure that you sweep the area in a wide arc because broken glass fragments tend to scatter over a wide area.
Warn other in the vicinity
In case any glass has broken during your remodelling project, warn others who might be in the vicinity. This will prevent people treading on the broken glass and injuring themselves. Also make sure that children are kept away from the area to avoid mishaps. It is a good idea to place a sign near the area to warn others about the broken glass. If you are working with other people, then one of you can stay to warn people while the others can go to fetch the cleaning equipment.
Ensure proper disposal
Glass cannot be disposed in garbage bags made of plastic or paper. The glass pieces will puncture the bags and all the contents will soon fall out. Instead you should use large cardboard boxes to store the broken glass. After you have collected all the broken fragments, you should seal the boxes with duct tape to prevent anything falling out. These boxes can be sent for recycling or disposal in a landfill. If the glass pieces are mixed with human bodily fluids, such as blood, then they should be stored in separate boxes and disposed of as medical waste.
By following these simple procedures, you can minimize the risk of injury when remodelling your home with glass.
