Safety Silences – Video Series

imageWe get asked so often about various topics and ideas that are never discussed in traditional safety (including β€˜safety differently’) so, we decided to start a video series called β€˜Safety Silences’. The purpose of this video series is to discuss topics that seem to be on the β€˜don’t discuss’ list in the risk and safety industry.

You can find the β€˜Safety Silences’ Folder of videos here: https://vimeo.com/user/57711103/folder/10215280

At the moment, there are 3 videos to watch, 2 with Dr Craig Ashhurst (expertise Collective Coherence) and One with Keith Lewis (ex Australian diplomat) on: Learning, Metaphor and Politics. As the video series grows we will include conversations on topics such as:

  • Transdisciplinarity
  • Ethics/Personhood
  • Embodiment
  • Linguistics
  • Semiotics
  • Socialitie
  • Mentalitie
  • Poetics
  • Culture
  • Archetypes
  • Psychology of goals
  • Performance
  • Professionalisation
  • Wicked problems
  • Transcoherence
  • Conscious-Unconscious
  • Strategic thinking
  • Psychology of Motivation
  • Sense-making
  • Ideology
  • Investigations silences
  • Methodology to method

So, over the next few months Dr Long and various colleagues will discuss these issues and more will be added, the fill the void of all that Safety choses to be silent about. These videos are not on Youtube but Vimeo, which means if you subscribe you will be automatically informed when a new video goes up.

Recently I had a look at the top 20 sites on safety videos/podcasts (https://welpmagazine.com/20-best-workplace-safety-podcasts-of-2021/ ) and dear me, all they speak about is the same thing: hazards, controls, accidents on β€˜spin and repeat’. Then there are other safety podcasts and it’s all about ego and marketing.

The goal of the Safety Silences conversations is education and learning. Why is it that all these vital topics essential to understanding risk and human persons are never discussed in safety? Why is it that all safety seems to want to regurgitate is more behaviourism, more individualism and more of the same?

So, log in, have a listen and if you would like a safety silence to be tackled, make a suggestion: rob@cllr.com.au

  1. I can’t believe my silly little podcast that is mostly bitching about the dumbassery in the safety industry made that list.

    1. Interesting Brent. I don’t know how the list is compiled but had a look at many of them and they are all the same, mostly about egos and promotion but nothing creative or innovative.

  2. Hi Rob and Craig, this is great and will be useful in sharing the need for a quantum shift in focus from traditional risk and safety to SPoR.

    Kind Regards

    Brian

    1. Thanks Brian. With so much missing in the curriculum and such narrow view of safety, someone has to fill the void. You have to afk the question: β€˜why is it that Safety never speaks of these things?’
