What do you do when someone gets injured at work? Do you think about the paperwork that should follow or do you genuinely care about attending to the needs of the person who is hurt? In this episode, Dr Robert Long, an internationally renowned social psychologist takes us on an intellectual journey to understand the importance of Care ethics in safety and risk. At the core of Care Ethics is the morality of personhood, community, care and helping. Dr Long warns us that the safety industry is known for its ideology of zero which locks it into counting, mechanics, regulation and policing, all common to a Masculinist Ethic. As such, it loses out on attending to the most basic human need for care and compassion.

Rob Long says
Thanks Brian. When the ideology of safety is zero it seems not to matter how you get such a result.

Dear Rob,
Many thanks for being yourself. The podcast with Nippin Anand was fascinating, especially the discussion on power and politics.
I also enjoyed the ending with the Philippino mariners and income tax, which left me reflecting on two alleged safety professionals on an upstream oil and gas project.
Both were BBS acolytes and reinforced compliance and enforcement and after a safety meeting they were gloating how they circumvented income tax legislation.
Rob Long says
Bernard, my interactions with mariners demonstrates one of the most exploited and oppressed class of people on the planet. I’m sure if anyone dies on the job, you won’t hear about it.
