Latest Breakthrough In Safety Communication and Learning
By Barry Spud
Safety has finally realised that it needs to be taken seriously and therefore must stop dumbing down the workforce with silly slogans, perfectionist goals and childish, condescending videos. This fun, innovative video “Struck By Mobile Equipment” from WorkSafeBC and recommended by Workcover NSW marks the start of a new era for safety. It is sure to get millions of hits on YouTube and I’m sure the workers will be able to immediately identify with and relate to the lego men. This will result in zero mobile plant incidents – ENJOY (and stop sniggering in the back row, this is serious and there will be a quiz at the end!):
I am shocked by some of the recent comments on Facebook about this awesome cute safety video, these people obviously don’t know anything about safety:
- “Wow! Let’s take humans out of safety, how dumb! I use the Lego man as a metaphor for reductionism and dehumanization. The whole is just a sum of the parts, a cog in the machine.”
- “what’d ya learn at work today Dad?” – Ummm Ahhhhhh
- “Will that mean the safety spuds are now going to make me write a SWMS every time before I play lego with my son?”
- “It’s funny but kids play at running toy cars and trucks into stuff and even running over dolls and other “people” toys – why would this teach them anything? And what adult looking at it would not see it for the silliness it is. I wonder how much money is wasted on this stuff?”
- “This has to be the worst safety video I have ever seen”
- “Did I see the hand of God in there?”

Safety Gets Even Dumber
Safety Gets Even Dumber This has to be the dumbest and most condescending safety initiative I’ve seen since Dumb Ways to Die and Hazardman. So all “workers” are robotic clones and there are are only 2 kinds – “Risk Avoiders” and “Unsafe Risk Takers” (USRT’s). Apparently USRT existence has baffled scientists for years.
