Harmonisation – be very afraid

Well, it looks like successful harmonsiation of the OHS laws across Australia is just not going to happen. It was as much the technical changes that I was looking forward to as to the opportunities for discussions and changes that businesses were putting in place in preparation of these new laws.
Businesses were conducting gap analysis’ of their safety systems to make sure they comply, and the ears of senior managers pricked up and conversations were being held about definitions of Officers and what it meant for them.
So what happens now? I hope government still use this time to market to businesses that it’s an opportunity to improve, that it gets on the board room table and stays there. I fear the big leather chair will switch to recline and feet will be put up on the table thinking it’s business as usual, regardless of the current status of their OHS.
This change in legislation was a great opportunity for businesses to get rid of their cobwebs and start talking about OHS at all levels of the business and iron out the wrinkles. Lets hope they still do a spring clean, regardless of if the in-laws are coming or not.
